Team 5019, the Gearbox Heroes, is a FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) team based in West Salem, Wisconsin. We are a co-op team between West Salem High School and Coulee Christian School, open to all students in grades 9–12.
Our motto is “With Cogs In Our Eyes” — reflecting our passion for engineering and technology. Each year we build a competition robot in six weeks to compete against teams from across the region and country.
Our History
The Gearbox Heroes were founded in 2014 as a rookie team. In our very first season we competed at the Minnesota 10,000 Lakes Regional, finishing 15th out of 63 teams (6-4-0) and earning two awards:
- Highest Rookie Seed Award
- Rookie All-Star Award — given to the rookie team best exemplifying FIRST’s mission to inspire students in science and technology
Those results qualified us for the 2014 FIRST Championship in St. Louis (Archimedes Division), where we opened with a 3-0 record and were briefly ranked 1st overall before finishing 67th in the division.
Since then we have competed in 13 seasons, primarily at the Seven Rivers Regional in La Crosse. In 2026, Wisconsin moved to a district model and we compete in the Wisconsin (WIN) District.
